Solo Guitar Improv: Heavy Breathing Medley (mp3)

For your listening enjoyment, the Heavy Breathing Medley

I began this piece with a guitar meditation, ie, I plugged everything in, tuned into my breath and waited to see what would come out. Take into account the genre (Heavy Stoner Sludge) and hence the title. I have broken it down thusly in my mind after the fact:

A - Heavy Breathing 1
B - Found In A Hawai’ian Labyrinth
C - Inspired by Singing Birds
D - Heavy Breathing 2

8 mics (only 7 in the final mix), 2 amps, one guitar, a few pedals, some high ceilings and stone floors… WYHIWYG!!

Feline Cuisine

Someone from Z’s office called in asking if we knew any good Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, L.A. Someone is in need of lunch. Offhand, I don’t know of any. Z might have some ideas.

But our cat, Kira, says she knows where some good Feline cuisine can be had - sauteed mouse tails, for starters, and that’s just the appetizers. It’s a funky little place in Cat Town, and you can even get a whole rat platter if you’re in the mood to splurge, eyes and bones and hair and gristle and all. Not everyone wants their rat with eyeballs, and if you don’t like it that way, you can always get it mashed or mauled, with the bones and fur removed. Fish is also available in various kinds and styles, from fresh-caught to stinky and rotting.

Kira says there’s also an excellent raw food place not far from there - not just whole rat but raw whole rat, or raw mouse, or so forth. Sort of a sushi-equivalent. You can get a little plate of grass for dessert to aid with digestion and with coughing up the less digestible bits. Appetizers there include live flies, chilled to render them sluggish. Tasty, but you’ll be hungry again an hour later.

My dad, the “retired forensic profiler”

If you’re into serial killers and unsolved murders and things like that (aren’t some people into serial killers? I know some people USED to be into them. It was a whole THING there for a while. Like sour candy. Or bungee jumping… Weird. Whatever) you might want to check out this weekend’s episode of THS INVESTIGATES on the E! channel.

Gotta say, the show is mostly pretty dull to look at, glacially paced and short on meaningful content. The device of using pleasant snapshots of the victims while they were still alive, these photos then placed strategically in natural environments to represent the bodies, is unusual and interesting, though the reasoning behind this production choice is not apparent.

But my clever and insightful male parent, JOHN PHILPIN, is in it. He’s mainly in the second half, talking about the technically-still-unsolved Valley Murders of Claremont, NH and surrounding areas. New shit has come to light, you see. I know I’m biased but I think he’s the most interesting guy on the show by far, and he definitely has the longest hair of any male they talked to.

Back up a second - why is my dad on this show?

Well, see, he’s a “retired forensic psychologist,” or so they say. He worked on the Valley Murders while they were happening, he was the subject (in absence of an identifiable villain to hog the spotlight) of Phil Ginsburg’s book on the case (The Shadow Of Death, though Phil’s original title Valley Of The Shadow was probably better, blame the publisher I suppose), and John has also written a few books himself. Some are novels, of which I recommend The Murder Channel and Tunnel of Night. Some are what they call True Crime, of which I recommend Stalemate.
